The Isla de Flores has been officially designated as a "Pueblo Pintoresco" following the completion of actions outlined by the Instituto Guatemalteco de Turismo (INGUAT) and meeting the necessary criteria. The announcement was made after Flores fulfilled requirements aimed at enhancing its cultural and natural features.

The "Pueblo Pintoresco" program, led by INGUAT, aims to highlight, conserve, and revitalize towns with significant historical and natural characteristics. According to INGUAT, local authorities and civil society must be committed to maintaining standards such as cleanliness, traffic reorganization, landscaping of green areas, signage regulation, and implementing a tourism security program.

INGUAT provided technical support throughout the process to help improve the image of Isla de Flores in Petén. This included supplying paint for renovating building facades on selected streets identified by the municipal tourism planning office. As part of INGUAT's “Arte y turismo, un país con más color” project, murals depicting local nature and culture were created at the Centro Universitario de Petén (CUDEP).

Initially, nine towns were nominated for their unique qualities to be considered for the "Pueblo Pintoresco" title. These include San Juan del Obispo in La Antigua Guatemala (Sacatepéquez), Livingston (Izabal), San Cristóbal Totonicapán, Quetzaltenango city, Salcajá (Quetzaltenango), Santa Catarina Palopó (Sololá), Zacapa city, Estanzuela (Zacapa), and Isla de Flores (Petén). Of these nominees, Estanzuela and Isla de Flores have now received official recognition as Pueblos Pintorescos in Guatemala.

Further details about this recognition can be found on the Guatemalan government’s press release website.

"The INGUAT has provided permanent technical support so that the actions carried out contribute to improving the image of Isla de Flores," according to a statement from INGUAT.
