The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food (MAGA) has carried out activities in schools in Zacapa to promote healthy eating habits and the creation of educational gardens. Through its Municipal Rural Extension Agencies, MAGA organized talks on the importance of consuming a variety of colorful foods and established teaching gardens at several local schools.

At La Pepesca School in Río Hondo, 24 children participated in a session about the benefits of eating foods with different colors. This approach aims to encourage students to eat fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts, seeds, and whole grains from various color groups to ensure a balanced intake of vitamins, antioxidants, minerals, and fiber.

In addition to the nutrition talk at La Pepesca School, an educational garden was set up. The goal is for students to learn about food production processes and how vegetables contribute to their health.

Similar efforts took place at the National Institute of Diversified Education in El Rosario, also in Río Hondo municipality. Ten students attended discussions on healthy eating and helped establish another school garden.

Support was also provided for creating a school garden at the Official Rural Mixed School in El Oreganal village, Teculután municipality.

According to MAGA: "These actions are promoted by MAGA to encourage food and nutrition education among students while fostering healthy and sustainable habits."
