In response to falling temperatures in several regions, the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food (MAGA) has issued recommendations for agricultural and livestock producers across the country. The advice follows data from the National Institute of Seismology, Volcanology, Meteorology and Hydrology (INSIVUMEH), which indicates that cold conditions will persist in areas above 1,700 meters above sea level. This is expected to affect 11 departments and 118 municipalities, particularly in the West and Highlands where cloud cover and temperature drops continue.
Crops such as vegetables, pastures, and coffee are at risk due to these cold conditions. MAGA is monitoring the situation using a vegetation cover map.
Specialists from the Vice Ministry of Rural Economic Development (VIDER) have advised producers to irrigate crops at night or early morning to retain soil moisture and minimize cold damage. They recommend avoiding heavy pruning during this period of low temperatures. Producers are also encouraged to maintain proper crop nutrition, monitor the development of buds and sensitive fruit plants, and incorporate plant material into the soil during field cleaning to improve structure, retain moisture, and strengthen biological activity.
Experts from the Vice Ministry of Agricultural Health and Regulations (VISAR) advise livestock producers to shelter newborn animals in dry and warm places. They recommend providing colostrum immediately after birth, managing curtains and ventilation appropriately in barns to preserve warmth, and using heat sources when necessary in maintenance areas.
"The MAGA reaffirms its commitment to provide timely information and technical recommendations to strengthen productive resilience in the country in response to climate variations," stated MAGA officials.
