Producers in Panzós, Alta Verapaz, recently took part in a technical exchange focused on building aquaculture ponds lined with geomembrane. This technology is considered efficient and suitable for the region's geographic conditions.
The event was supported by technicians from the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food (Ministerio de Agricultura, Ganadería y Alimentación, MAGA), through its Vice Ministry of Rural Economic Development (VIDER). These technicians provided practical knowledge and shared local experiences.
According to the organizers, using geomembrane allows for better water control, improves sanitary conditions for cultivation, and increases planting density. This results in higher productivity per cubic meter compared to traditional earth ponds.
During the exchange, participants also discussed tilapia farming as a profitable and resilient option for rural communities. Tilapia’s rapid growth and adaptability make it an important contributor to food security in areas where access to other protein sources is limited.
Through VIDER, MAGA promotes appropriate technologies that improve aquaculture production, strengthen producers’ skills, and create local employment opportunities. The aim is to support more efficient and sustainable rural development.
