On December 2, 2025, a biological monitoring activity focused on inland fishing was conducted at the Río Dulce in Izabal. The initiative involved collecting biometric data from captured fish species, including measurements of weight in grams, total length in centimeters, sex, gonadal maturation status (classified as mature or immature), and gonadal weight in grams. The monitored species during this session were mojarras and palometa.
The monitoring of these two species is considered important for both ecological and fisheries management in the region. According to officials, the measurement process could extend over a year before final results are available.
The work was carried out by technicians from the Directorate of Fisheries and Aquaculture Regulation (DIPESCA) through the Vice Ministry of Agricultural Health and Regulations (VISAR), part of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food (MAGA).
Officials stated that such actions help strengthen control, monitoring, and protection of aquatic resources in Guatemala. They also contribute to sustainable management of inland fisheries and the preservation of biodiversity in the country’s water bodies.
