The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food (MAGA) held a technical session on fisheries governance in Izabal from November 24 to 27, 2025. The event aimed to promote the sustainability of shrimp and fish resources in the Bay of Amatique and the Guatemalan Caribbean.
The meeting was organized through the Directorate of Fisheries and Aquaculture Regulation (DIPESCA), under the Vice Ministry of Agricultural Health and Regulations (VISAR). Local authorities, small-scale artisanal fishermen, and shrimp sector representatives participated in developing joint proposals.
During the session, MAGA stated: "Decisions on fisheries management will be based exclusively on scientific studies, including ecosystem carrying capacity and available biological evidence."
At the Shrimp Sector Governance Table, it was reported that catch levels remain stable but fishing effort has reached its sustainable limit. This situation highlights the need for coordinated actions.
In response, shrimp sector representatives proposed a voluntary no-fishing zone extending 500 meters from the coast to protect nursery areas.
The governance table for Manjúa resources presented updated biological findings such as species diversity and maturity sizes. These data will inform decisions about closed seasons for 2026. The participants also agreed to strengthen monitoring efforts and speed up licensing processes for fishermen to help formalize the sector.
MAGA reiterated its commitment: "We will keep these dialogue spaces open and participatory with the aim of ensuring peaceful coexistence, safeguarding labor rights, and protecting marine biodiversity in the Guatemalan Caribbean. Responsible and sustainable management of fishery resources will always be prioritized."
