The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food (MAGA) has released its 2025 analysis of the Deforestation-Free and Low-Emissions Livestock Model. The findings indicate that the program will expand in 2026 to include more producers and strengthen the technical team with specialized training and new support methodologies.
The Sustainable Livestock team from the Directorate of Natural Resources and Agrotourism (DIRNA), under the Vice Ministry for Petén Affairs (VIPETEN), led this analysis. They reported significant improvements in implementing silvopastoral systems, rational pasture management, soil conservation, and strategies to reduce emissions. The report also notes enhanced training processes and technical assistance, resulting in increased knowledge and capacity among producers.
More than 130 livestock producers in Petén have adopted sustainable practices aimed at increasing productivity and efficiency without compromising natural resources. Support for developing forest management plans has also enabled access to forestry incentives, encouraging income diversification and restoration of degraded areas.
“These results consolidate the model as a strategic tool that allows combining productivity with environmental and economic sustainability, laying the foundation for its expansion and strengthening in 2026,” according to MAGA’s statement.
