The United Nations Tourism Organization (UN Tourism) has reached an agreement with Harris Whitbeck, Director General of the Guatemalan Institute of Tourism (INGUAT), to support the development of two key documents aimed at strengthening Guatemala's tourism sector. The agreement includes creating an investment guide for tourism and assessing the tools used to measure and evaluate tourism in order to plan for the next decade.
The meeting took place during the International Tourism Fair (FITUR) in Madrid, Spain. Participants included Zurab Pololikashvili, Secretary-General of the World Tourism Organization, Gustavo Santos, UN Tourism Director for the Americas, as well as Whitbeck and members of his delegation.
After the meeting, Whitbeck stated: "Proper planning accompanied by experts from UN Tourism and the development of the Investment Guide for Tourism will promote this sector as one of the engines for sustainable development. It will allow investment in better infrastructure, boost the services sector, encourage quality jobs, and enable Guatemala to increase its number of visitors as one of the top three destinations to visit in Latin America."
