George Selgin, economist and senior fellow at the Cato Institute, will receive an honorary doctorate from Francisco Marroquín University. The award will be presented during the graduation ceremony on Saturday, November 8, 2025, at the Manuel F. Ayau Garden. Professor Julio H. Cole will deliver the commendation for Dr. Selgin.

The graduation event will include 163 students celebrating their academic achievements. Of these graduates, forty-three will receive honors distinctions. On Friday, November 7, distinguished graduates will be awarded cum laude, magna cum laude, and summa cum laude medals. Marimaite Rayo Araiz of the Institute of Political Studies and International Relations will speak on behalf of the honored graduates.

The university emphasizes that its new graduates are expected to carry forward its mission in their professional fields: "the teaching and dissemination of the ethical, legal and economic principles of a society of free and responsible persons."

George Selgin is editor of the Alt-M blog, professor emeritus at the Terry College of Business at the University of Georgia, and associate editor at EconJournal Watch. He has also taught at George Mason University, University of Hong Kong, and West Virginia University.

"The ceremony promises to be a memorable gathering where academic excellence and commitment to freedom are recognized," according to organizers.
