Technical staff from the Directorate of Fisheries and Aquaculture (DIPESCA) participated in an institutional strengthening workshop organized by the Municipality of Puerto Barrios through its Municipal Coordinator for Disaster Reduction (COMRED). The event took place on October 27, 2025, at the municipal auditorium.
The session focused on legal frameworks for risk management, the operation of the National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction (CONRED), tiered response systems, and the National Response Plan. These topics are aimed at improving preparedness and coordination during emergencies related to fishing and aquaculture activities.
According to officials, "These skills strengthen the capacity of personnel to act effectively, in a coordinated and timely manner in potential emergencies, in accordance with the Institutional Response Plan (PIR) of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food (MAGA)."
DIPESCA operates under the Vice Ministry of Agricultural Health and Regulations (VISAR) and is responsible for regulating fisheries and aquaculture. Its main functions include monitoring, prevention, and support when threats such as harmful algal blooms ("Red Tide") arise. Participation in these types of trainings helps enhance institutional readiness to respond to situations that may impact national fisheries resources.
The ministry stated: "In this way, MAGA reaffirms its commitment to comprehensive risk management and protection of coastal and fishing livelihoods by promoting preventive actions to safeguard food security and sustainability of aquatic ecosystems."
