José Antonio López, Deputy Minister of Rural Economic Development, met with a delegation from the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT). The CIMMYT team included Pedro Priego Pozos, Head of Public Affairs and Government for Latin America; Jorge García, Manager of the Chiapas–Guatemala Hub; and Marcelo García, Project Coordinator and National Liaison for CIMMYT in Guatemala.
During the meeting, CIMMYT representatives outlined their ongoing initiatives in Guatemala. These efforts focus on training and capacity building in climate-adapted sustainable agriculture. They also highlighted strategic research and experience sharing related to the keyline approach for efficient water and soil management.
CIMMYT operates through two hubs in western and eastern regions of Guatemala. From these locations, they promote innovative practices aimed at strengthening agricultural system resilience and improving productivity among smallholder farmers.
According to those involved, "This dialogue will enable progress in cooperation between MAGA and CIMMYT for financial resource management and contribute to achieving the strategic objectives of this ministry."
