Between January and October 2025, over 204,000 tilapia fingerlings were distributed to rural families in Petén, Guatemala. The initiative benefited 1,447 families across 14 municipalities in the department.
The project was carried out by staff from the Directorate of Agricultural Development (DAGRO), under the Vice Ministry for Petén Affairs (VIPETÉN) of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food (MAGA).
Communities in Flores, San José, San Benito, San Andrés, La Libertad, San Francisco, Santa Ana, Dolores, San Luis, Sayaxché, Melchor de Mencos, Poptún, Las Cruces and El Chal received support through this program.
According to MAGA: "With this initiative, MAGA strengthens local productive capacities and promotes fish farming as a sustainable alternative for income generation, economic diversification and family food supply."
The fingerlings were produced at the Eco-productive Center El Remate in Flores. This center is dedicated to breeding and managing aquatic species to support local producers with improved production systems.
MAGA states that these efforts are part of broader programs aimed at supporting sustainable development in rural communities while promoting food security and nutrition for beneficiary families.
