Guatemala has joined the International Code for the Protection of Tourists, an initiative promoted by the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO). The announcement was made during the International Tourism Fair (FITUR) held in Madrid, Spain. The signing took place in the presence of UNWTO Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvilli, the President of Guatemala, and tourism ministers from the region.
According to UNWTO, this code serves as a key framework for tourism recovery following COVID-19. It sets minimum standards for protecting tourists during emergencies and outlines their rights as consumers. More information about the code can be found at https://www.unwto.org/es/codigo-internacional-para-la-proteccion-de-los-turistas.
The code is aimed at governments, public and private sector agents, and tourists themselves. Its main goal is to restore consumer confidence and make tourism environments more attractive by creating a sense of security among travelers and improving contractual relationships between service providers and recipients.
Guatemala’s participation in this initiative is voluntary. According to officials, it will help promote recommendations for policy development that support the protection of both domestic and international visitors.
