The “First National Meeting on Achievements and Challenges of the Cooperative Electric Sector in Guatemala” took place on September 25 and 26, 2025. The event was organized by CONFECOOP and Project Indiana, with collaboration from INDE and the Ministry of Energy and Mines (MEM).
The opening remarks were delivered by Minister Víctor Hugo Ventura Ruiz. Acting Minister Erwin Rolando Barrios Torres presented on “The present and future of the legal and regulatory framework for the electric sector related to Electric Cooperatives.” During his address, he informed attendees that on September 26, 2025, the Acuerdo Ministerial number 261-2025/SG, “Guidelines for Voluntary Registration of Rural Isolated Systems before the Ministry of Energy and Mines,” was published in the Diario de Centroamérica.
Leaders from operational electric cooperatives attended the meeting. They expressed interest in enrolling in the Register of Rural Isolated Systems and shared their questions with Acting Minister Barrios Torres.
According to MEM, "the commitment to rural electrification assumed by the Government of Dr. Bernardo Arévalo advances steadily for the benefit of Guatemalans and to combat energy poverty."
