The Editorial Universitaria of Universidad del Valle de Guatemala (UVG) has announced the release of three new publications as part of its 2025 call for submissions. Since its establishment, the editorial branch has aimed to promote scientific, technical, artistic, and humanistic knowledge by publishing works from authors connected to the university community. Its activities include editing and distributing books that range from specialized research to literary expressions and personal testimonies.

The editorial also provides training opportunities for authors through workshops, calls for submissions, and editorial support processes. This approach has resulted in publications that contribute to both academic and cultural fields. “We have held annual calls to enrich our space and offer a wide variety of topics in which our community participates,” said Dr. Vanessa Granados, director of Editorial Universitaria UVG.

One of the new books is “Orquídeas de Guatemala: 462 especies + 6 híbridos.” This work documents the country’s biodiversity by presenting a photographic collection featuring 462 species and six hybrids of orchids found in Guatemala. Each entry includes the scientific name, characteristics, and habitat information. “We decided to dedicate the book to those who were our mentors and wish to recognize their connection with the conservation of Guatemalan flora,” said M.Sc. Monzón. The publication is available in print format for researchers, students, and botany enthusiasts.

Another release is “Emprendedores que trascienden, historias de quienes se atrevieron a soñar.” This book was created collaboratively by Víctor Hugo Ayerdi, Bianca Contreras, Jorge Mario García, Alejandra Piedrasanta, Luisa Sosa, and Mariana Wer. It features stories about 16 alumni and four students from UVG who started their own businesses across sectors such as technology, food production, health care, artificial intelligence, and space exploration. The electronic version can be downloaded free of charge on the publisher’s website.

The third publication is an anthology titled “Antología de Poemas,” written by Karla Cal—an employee at UVG—and María José Llamas—a student in Strategic Communication. The book consists of two collections: “Al vuelo” by Cal and “Poemas cinematográficos” by Llamas. After receiving an honorable mention in the 2025 call for submissions from Editorial Universitaria UVG, both authors participated in a literary coaching process led by M.A. Alejandra Osorio from the Department of Strategic Communication; Dr. Granados coordinated publication management.

“Each poem in this book is a take—an emotional photograph; some are close-ups of intimacy while others are wide shots capturing our lives,” stated Llamas. The e-book can be accessed online through Editorial Universitaria UVG’s digital library.

Since 2018 Editorial Universitaria UVG has organized an annual contest inviting students, staff members or researchers within its community who have manuscripts ready for publication; winners are selected each year by an editorial committee for future release.
