Twelve families in the Santa Catarina 2 Rural Learning Center (CADER) in San Jerónimo, Baja Verapaz, now have access to a new water reservoir and drip irrigation system. The project aims to improve crop productivity and ensure water supply during the dry season.

The initiative involved installing an 11,000-liter geomembrane-lined reservoir and a drip irrigation system. These were provided by the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food (MAGA). The families participating in CADER contributed additional materials and helped build and implement the system.

The infrastructure was developed through several steps: preparing and leveling the land for the reservoir, casting metal posts for structural support, placing welded mesh for reinforcement, installing the geomembrane for safe water storage, and setting up the drip irrigation system to use water efficiently and boost garden productivity.

Families received training on how to use, manage, and maintain both the reservoir and irrigation system to ensure long-term sustainability of the project.

"This action was developed by professionals from the Department of Urban Agriculture (DAU), the Municipal Rural Extension Agency, and the Soil and Water Conservation area of the municipality, all part of MAGA."

Technical support was provided at each stage to strengthen productive capacities and promote practices that can increase yields in rural communities across Guatemala.
