The cultivation of okra, also known as "quimbombó," is gaining attention in Alta Verapaz, Guatemala. Local producer Carmen Virginia Tiul from Panzós describes okra as a beneficial and nutritious product. “Okra is a beneficial and very nutritious product for health,” said Tiul about the crop that is starting to stand out in the region.

Okra is valued for its high nutritional content, including vitamins, minerals, and soluble fiber. Its versatility allows it to be consumed raw, cooked, or fried. The demand for okra has been growing in international markets.

In addition to its nutritional benefits, the cultivation of okra is becoming an economic driver in Alta Verapaz by creating jobs and diversifying agricultural production. Women in rural areas are playing an active role in planting, harvesting, and selling okra. Their participation helps improve family income and community well-being.

Technical support from the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food (MAGA), through the Vice Ministry of Rural Economic Development (VIDER), has enabled more families to see okra as a profitable and sustainable alternative.
