The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food (MAGA) recently observed biosecurity protocols at Bejo, a seed production company in Monjas, Jalapa. The visit was led by Mayra Motta, Vice Minister of Agricultural Health and Regulations.
Bejo is a member of the Guatemalan Seed Association (ASEG). The company specializes in producing seeds for tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, and other vegetables exclusively for export markets.
During her visit, Motta reviewed the strict biosecurity measures implemented by Bejo. These include changing shoes and clothing upon entry to the farm, mandatory handwashing, and inspections to prevent any contaminants from entering the cultivation areas. Such procedures are necessary to ensure that plant material meets the phytosanitary requirements demanded by international markets.
"It is impressive what we have learned about these processes that ensure the quality of the final product," said Motta. She highlighted that private initiatives like these help position Guatemala as a producer of high-quality seeds.
Motta also emphasized the importance of close collaboration between MAGA and exporting companies to strengthen technical cooperation and promote joint actions that support agricultural competitiveness in Guatemala.
Bejo operates in more than 30 countries and is recognized as a global leader in vegetable seed breeding and production with high standards for innovation and quality.
