The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food (MAGA) led the eighth regional workshop to develop the National Fire Policy (PNF) in Panajachel, Sololá. The event gathered more than 65 key stakeholders from the departments of Sololá, Totonicapán, and Suchitepéquez.
Participants at this session were part of the second group from the Southwestern region involved in MAGA’s countrywide planning process. This series of meetings is being held as part of MAGA's 2025 institutional commitments.
During the workshop, attendees focused on identifying and analyzing issues related to fire use in agricultural and forestry systems. They worked on developing a Problem Tree analysis to diagnose causes and effects associated with inappropriate fire use in rural areas.
The exchange of experiences among participants from the three departments contributed to technical discussions. It helped identify common patterns, specific vulnerabilities, and ancestral practices that should be considered for a realistic and culturally relevant policy.
"Thanks to this workshop, MAGA seeks to strengthen inter-institutional coordination to address challenges related to comprehensive fire management in the Guatemalan highlands," stated representatives from MAGA.
The ministry collaborated with the Departmental Government of Sololá and other institutions for technical support through specialists from the Directorate of Rural Geospatial Information (DIGEGR) and the Planning Directorate.
Looking ahead, MAGA aims to consolidate technical and social inputs that will shape the PNF. The ministry continues efforts to foster dialogue spaces that contribute toward building an inclusive, technically sound public policy with a territorial approach.
