Elena Rosmery Calí Sotz has been named the Manuel F. Ayau Scholar 2025 at Francisco Marroquín University. The recognition was awarded during a ceremony honoring distinguished graduates of the university. Calí, a student from the Faculty of Law, received this distinction for her passion, commitment, leadership, and drive as part of the Impulso al Talento Académico (ITA) scholarship program.

"Since my childhood I discovered an inclination for stories. I grew up listening to my father's tales, reading books that opened doors to new worlds. Those early experiences awakened in me curiosity and the desire to understand different perspectives on life. Over time, I realized that stories were not just a form of entertainment but also a powerful way to understand and communicate ideas. When I discovered economics, I found a bridge between both passions: using stories as a tool to share knowledge and promote development in my community. That vision has become a guide that directs my decisions, studies, and goals," said Elena Calí after receiving the award from Manuel Ayau A., trustee of Casa de la Libertad.

"I have had the opportunity to participate in projects and activities that I never imagined possible and that have repeatedly pushed me out of my comfort zone. Although they have represented significant challenges, each one has allowed me to develop new skills and meet extraordinary people from whom I have learned invaluable lessons. The ITA scholarship has meant much more than financial support. It has been a symbol of trust and proof that effort and dedication can turn dreams into tangible realities," she added on November 7, 2025.

"Today I want to express my most sincere gratitude to Francisco Marroquín University, the ITA scholarship program, Fundación Educación, and all donors who make this project possible. Thanks to your commitment, young people like me have the opportunity to access transformative education and actively contribute to our country's development," concluded Elena Calí.

Other recipients of the Manuel F. Ayau Scholar distinction include Abner Xocop, Juan Carlos Arriaza, Josías López, Mario Zepeda, Héctor Choy, José Luis García, Wilder Villeda from the Faculty of Economic Sciences; Kimberly Santizo, David Ixmalej, Jorge Mario Menchú, Emilie Adant and Danilo Carías from the Faculty of Law; as well as Brisa Morales from the Institute of Political Studies and International Relations.

At Francisco Marroquín University, being named Manuel F. Ayau Scholar is considered a symbol of diligence and intellectual curiosity. Recipients are expected to take responsibility for their actions while striving toward their goals using all available resources.

The Manuel F. Ayau Society was established in 2010 with the aim of sharing Ayau’s legacy as rector emeritus and founder of Francisco Marroquín University in 1971. He was known for his advocacy for individual freedom—a principle closely tied with UFM’s mission: teaching ethical principles within a free society.
