The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food (MAGA) has started distributing food aid to 17,049 families in vulnerable conditions in the municipalities of Santo Tomás Chichicastenango (Quiché) and San Jacinto (Chiquimula). This initiative is being carried out through the Vice Ministry of Food and Nutritional Security (VISAN).
Each family receives a free ration that includes beans, rice, nixtamalized flour, vegetable oil, oat flakes, sugar fortified with vitamin A, iodized salt, and fortified corn-soy flour. These products are chosen to support the diet of households affected by poverty and at risk of food insecurity.
Deliveries are taking place simultaneously in Quiché—where 16,139 families in Santo Tomás Chichicastenango are being assisted—and in Chiquimula—where 910 families in San Jacinto are receiving aid.
The process is coordinated by the Directorate of Food and Nutritional Assistance (DAAN) under VISAN. Their staff work on-site to ensure timely, orderly, and efficient distribution. Deliveries will continue over the coming days until all scheduled families have received assistance.
Delegates from the Office of the Comptroller General oversee these activities to ensure proper distribution and transparency. "Las jornadas cuentan con la presencia de delegados de la Contraloría General de Cuentas, quienes supervisan la correcta distribución y garantizan la transparencia del proceso," states MAGA.
