Producers, local authorities, and technical teams from the Las Verapaces region took part in a workshop focused on risk communication and community participation for the prevention of Avian Influenza. The event aimed to strengthen community surveillance and improve response capacity to potential health events in Alta Verapaz and Baja Verapaz.
The workshop emphasized the importance of early notification as a key factor for activating timely control mechanisms. Participants developed tools to enhance information flow between institutions and communities, as well as strategies to prevent rumors and misinformation during health risk situations.
Biosecurity measures, communication protocols, and community organization were integrated into the session with the goal of establishing coordinated responses in case of suspected Avian Influenza cases.
The National Poultry Health Program (PROSA) from the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, and Food (MAGA) highlighted its role in providing verified information, promoting biosecurity practices, and managing official communications such as health alerts and educational messages.
Avian Influenza is a highly contagious viral disease affecting domestic and wild birds. If not detected or controlled promptly, it poses risks to animal health and public health.
Representatives from CONAP, the Departmental Government, MSPAS, local health service networks, administrative units, and community organizations also participated. Their involvement underlined an inter-institutional commitment to protect poultry production and strengthen territorial preparedness against avian diseases.
