The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food (MAGA), through the Municipal Rural Extension Agency (AMER) in San Mateo, Quetzaltenango, recently organized a workshop on preparing nutritious meals. The initiative aimed to promote healthy eating practices and strengthen food security among families in local communities.
As part of MAGA's Rural Home component, an extension worker visited the community of Santucur in San Mateo. Seven families participated and received technical support for preparing recipes using ingredients from their home gardens, such as Swiss chard and black nightshade.
In addition to practical cooking guidance, the session included information about the nutritional value and benefits of each ingredient used in the recipes. According to MAGA, "the establishment of family gardens is promoted through the work of its departmental teams."
These training sessions on nutrition and creating cultivation spaces provide significant support for families. Beyond self-consumption, surplus produce from these gardens is often sold at markets.
