Each year on December 3, Guatemala observes Public Agricultural Sector Day. The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food (MAGA) used the occasion to highlight the work of its Directorate for Regional Coordination and Rural Extension (DICORER).
Rural extension is described as a non-formal educational process aimed at rural populations. Through this service, advice and information are provided to help rural families solve problems and meet their basic needs.
DICORER promotes development through several key actions. These include technical assistance and training, which provide support to rural families in adopting new technologies and innovations. The directorate also encourages the use of sustainable agricultural technologies while monitoring crops. Additionally, DICORER facilitates access to technology, education, and local markets for farmers, while identifying and addressing the needs of agricultural communities.
The focus of rural extension work is on comprehensive community development by implementing strategies that have a multiplier effect on families. Areas of emphasis include building capacity among agricultural producers, improving rural household conditions, and encouraging participation from women, children, and youth in experience-sharing activities to enhance knowledge and skills.
On this day, MAGA expressed gratitude to all public sector agricultural workers for their ongoing commitment to delivering services in the field. "On this special date, the Ministry of Agriculture thanks all collaborators in the public agricultural sector for their daily commitment in bringing MAGA's services to the countryside, being a helping hand for agricultural development," stated MAGA.
