More than fifty staff members at Universidad Rafael Landívar have completed a twenty-week course in Guatemalan Sign Language (LENSEGUA), as part of the university’s ongoing efforts to promote inclusion. The training was delivered by the Asociación Educativa para el Sordo (ASEDES), which collaborates with the university on communication accessibility initiatives.
The program provided participants with basic skills for communicating with deaf individuals in everyday situations, aiming to improve services offered to both students and the general public. At the closing event, participants demonstrated their new abilities by presenting the Guatemalan National Anthem, short stories, and dialogues in LENSEGUA. Diplomas were awarded, and it was announced that additional cohorts will be launched as part of continued professional development for university staff.
According to the university, "With this action, Universidad Rafael Landívar strengthens its commitment to implementing its Inclusion Policy, aimed at ensuring that all people can fully participate in university life." The policy is structured around four main pillars.
The completion of this first cohort is described as an important step toward making the institution more accessible and respectful of diversity. The university stated: "With initiatives like this one, Universidad Rafael Landívar continues advancing its mission to contribute to the right to inclusive and dignified education for all people."
