The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food (MAGA) has distributed 1,600 asper bamboo plants to 64 recipients in the municipalities of San Miguel Panan, San José el Ídolo, Rio Bravo, and San Pablo Jocopilas in Suchitepéquez. The goal is to promote soil conservation and support bamboo as an agro-industrial crop.
The distribution was carried out by the departmental team of Suchitepéquez together with the Municipal Rural Extension Agencies (AMER). Each recipient received 25 plants for use in achieving these objectives.
According to MAGA, "Bamboo is a versatile species that can be used for the production of wood, paper, textiles and other products, making it an excellent option for diversifying productive activities in rural communities."
MAGA further stated: "MAGA promotes the use of bamboo as a sustainable alternative, thus contributing to income generation for producer families, economic development and environmental conservation."
The initiative also aims to encourage local producers' participation in the bamboo value chain to create business and employment opportunities within their communities.
