The Neurology Service at the Hospital General de Enfermedades marked Neurologist Day by highlighting the growing significance of neurology within the institution. Dr. Ligia Ibeth Portillo Rivera, head of the service, noted that neurological diseases are on the rise due to modern lifestyles.

Dr. Portillo emphasized the need to strengthen prevention, timely diagnosis, and health education to reduce the impact of these conditions. "Unhealthy habits and poor lifestyles increase the risk of developing neurodegenerative diseases, in addition to limited access to diagnostic tests and specialized treatments," she said.

She also pointed out that regular physical activity, a balanced diet, proper control of blood pressure and glucose levels, adequate rest, and avoiding tobacco and alcohol are key measures for reducing risks related to cerebrovascular diseases and cognitive decline.

Timely intervention is crucial in minimizing risks associated with neurological disorders. Dr. Portillo advised that people experiencing sudden vision loss, difficulty communicating, weakness in any part of the body, or trouble performing daily activities should seek immediate medical evaluation for early diagnosis and prompt treatment.

Neurologist Day is observed every November 29 in honor of Jean-Martin Charcot’s birthday; he is recognized as a founder of modern neurology. The day acknowledges neurologists’ work in preventing, diagnosing, and treating brain and nervous system disorders.

As part of ongoing improvements at the hospital, the Adult Neurology Unit has implemented an emergency care code for cerebrovascular disease using a mnemonic device called CHAPÍN:

- Facial droop
- Slurred speech
- Loss of strength in arm or leg
- Do not delay seeking help

This protocol aims to make it easier for patients and staff to identify possible stroke events quickly so they can receive immediate care at the hospital.

The Hospital General de Enfermedades most frequently treats neurological conditions such as strokes, epilepsy, headaches, Alzheimer’s disease, multiple sclerosis, and movement disorders like Parkinson’s disease. Dr. Portillo concluded by calling for stronger information campaigns so citizens can understand risks, recognize warning signs early on, and seek specialized attention when needed. "Neurology not only saves lives but also preserves autonomy and quality of life," she stated.
