The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food (MAGA) conducted a preventive campaign against the Screwworm in the communities of Parracaná and Chiaj, located in Santa Lucía Utatlán, Sololá. The effort aimed to improve the health of local livestock herds.
Technical staff from MAGA’s Epidemiological Surveillance and Rural Extension teams provided care to local producers during the campaign. Animals including cattle, horses, and sheep received vitamins and deworming treatments. After examination, wounds were treated to prevent infections. Educational sessions were also held to inform community members about the importance of addressing injuries promptly to prevent the development of screwworm fly larvae.
The initiative focused on promoting better sanitary and productive conditions for working and production animals by encouraging proper management practices in rural areas.
A total of 30 cattle, 10 horses, and 5 sheep were treated during the campaign. Ten small-scale producers benefited directly from these services and also received medications and technical support for ongoing prevention efforts within their own operations.
"With these interventions, MAGA reaffirms its commitment to work together with rural communities to strengthen animal health and protect the livelihoods of families dedicated to livestock production," according to MAGA.
