More than 480 scholarships have been awarded by Universidad Rafael Landívar (URL) for the 2026 academic year. The awards ceremony took place on November 21, bringing together students, their families, and university officials across the institution’s nine campuses in Guatemala.

The scholarships are managed by URL’s Scholarship Management Center and are available to undergraduate students at campuses in La Antigua Guatemala, Escuintla, Quiché, Jutiapa, Huehuetenango, La Verapaz, Zacapa, Quetzaltenango, and Guatemala City.

During the event, Rector Father Miquel Cortés Bofill addressed the recipients: “Today is a day of great joy. You have earned this scholarship thanks to the faith and effort you have put into your educational journey.”

He added: “For the Society of Jesus it is very important that education is of high quality. Above all, it should be based on human dignity. That is why we are pleased that thousands of scholarship recipients at our university bring their courage, desire and hopes to complete their studies here.”

“Today you begin an adventure and you are not alone. Our commitment is to accompany you in creating a hopeful future. Thank you for trusting in our educational project and our project for social transformation,” said Cortés Bofill.

Vice-Rector for University Identity Father José Antonio Rubio also spoke: “Education seeks to create leaders who serve the common good. You are heirs to this mission. Being a scholarship recipient means that through discipline and putting your heart into it, you will build a better Landívar community.”

At a panel during the event, new scholarship recipient María de los Ángeles López shared her perspective with her family present: “I think when choosing a university one should feel comfortable with the environment. Every time I come here it feels like being with family; that makes me feel Landívar. The facilities are very nice; people here are very kind; the curriculum is very good. Also impressive are the opportunities URL offers for work and study abroad. That’s why I chose Landívar.”

Scholarships were granted based on academic excellence, artistic or athletic talent, service vocation or socioeconomic need. Among those awarded were Matteo Ricci Scholarship; Monsignor Juan Gerardi Scholarship; Athletic Scholarship; Art & Culture Scholarship; URL/EJEGUA Scholarship; P. Isidro Iriarte S.J., which is exclusive for staff members or their children; Loyola Scholarship; Landívar Scholarship as well as various tuition discounts.

These scholarships apply only to undergraduate programs that have existed for at least two years and exclusively support first-time university students.

The program includes more than financial aid—it provides academic guidance throughout each student’s career path with regular follow-up sessions as well as participation in personal development activities coordinated by units within the Vice-Rectorate of University Identity.

This year’s distribution aligns with Universidad Rafael Landívar's mission of promoting access to higher education with academic excellence and social responsibility while fostering inclusion and justice.

Applications for next year’s scholarships will open during the first semester prior to each new school year through official university channels.
