The Guatemalan Social Security Institute (IGSS) held its first introductory symposium on Health Technology Assessment for Medicines, aiming to improve the process of generating scientific and transparent information to support decision-making in healthcare.

Health Technology Assessment for Medicines is a method that helps guide decisions about which medicines should be included, modified, or excluded from the national health system and the institution’s basic list of medicines. The symposium marks one of the initial efforts in Guatemala to provide education on this topic.

Dr. Maxim Biegansky from the Department of Pharmacotherapy stated, "This has a positive impact for the Institute and for affiliated members and beneficiaries, as it provides scientific, solid, and transparent information to acquire safe and effective medicines, ensuring efficient use of resources."

The event represents an early step toward education and training in this area within Guatemala. Currently, there are no local training programs available on this subject. Dr. Oliver Aroche, head of the Central Therapeutic Directorate, said, "This activity is one of the first efforts in the country to generate a process of education and training on this subject since there are no training programs in Guatemala; therefore these skills have been acquired abroad."
