Staff from the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food (MAGA) participated in a diploma course on the welfare of companion animals. The training was organized in partnership with the Animal Welfare Unit (UBA) and the University of San Carlos of Guatemala (USAC).
The event took place in person from November 25 to 27, 2025, at the Dr. Carlos Ruano auditorium of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Husbandry at USAC.
The course included six modules aimed at strengthening technical skills related to animal protection and welfare. Topics covered included the background of animal welfare, responsible ownership, basic needs for animal welfare, inter-institutional cooperation on animal welfare issues, and prevention strategies for livestock screwworms.
Participants represented several departments within MAGA and other organizations. These included the National Swine Health Program (PRONASPORC), SITRAMAGA, Animal Health Laboratory (LSA) under the Vice Ministry of Food Security and Nutrition (VISAN), Human Resources, Office for State Reserve Areas Control (OCRET), Humane World for Animals (HWA), Geographic Information and Risk Management Directorate (DIGEGR), Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Husbandry (FMVZ), Animal Health Directorate (DSA), Planning Directorate (DIPLAN), Livestock Screwworm Program (GBG), Productive Infrastructure Directorate (DIREPRO), Vice Ministry of Rural Economic Development (VIDER), Financial Administration Unit (UDAFA) and other technical teams from MAGA.
According to organizers, "These actions are part of our institutional commitment to promote continuous staff training and strengthen intersectoral coordination for the protection and welfare of companion animals in Guatemala."
