The Guatemalan Social Security Institute (IGSS), in collaboration with the Pan American Social Marketing Organization (PASMO), organized workshops and informational talks on HIV/AIDS to mark World AIDS Day, observed annually on December 1.
During the event, participants had the opportunity to address their questions with professionals leading the sessions. Attendees learned about the importance of early detection of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), main causes of transmission, prevention strategies, comprehensive care approaches, and participated in a workshop titled “Conscious and Responsible Sexuality.”
Currently, IGSS provides care for 2,963 cases related to HIV/AIDS. Among these are ten children and five pregnant women. The institute offers multidisciplinary support that includes specialties such as infectious diseases, nutrition, laboratory services, and psychological counseling.
As part of the activities commemorating World AIDS Day, HIV/AIDS tests were conducted during the event. Erick Zamora, a promoter from PASMO, stated: “The implementation of the Medical Care System in Company Clinics has been a driver for timely detection of this virus; 25 people between 18 and 21 years old have already been identified through this system who were unaware of their condition; these protocols have been implemented together with the epidemiology unit and laboratory unit.”
Patients waiting for medical appointments also received information and training about HIV/AIDS during the workshop. The External Consultation Unit for Diseases “Autonomía” in zone 9 has a specialized clinic where patients can undergo rapid, safe, confidential HIV/AIDS testing accompanied by counseling from trained staff.
