The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food (MAGA) has announced that cold, foggy, and windy conditions are expected to affect various regions of the country over the upcoming weekend. This forecast is based on data from the National Institute of Seismology, Volcanology, Meteorology and Hydrology (INSIVUMEH).
According to an agrometeorological analysis, temperatures are projected to drop below five degrees Celsius. Winds from the north may exceed 40 km/h, with fog and morning drizzle especially in the Northern Transversal Strip, Eastern Valleys, Izabal, southern Petén, and mountainous areas.
The report also indicates cloudy skies and nighttime rains will be more pronounced in the Caribbean region and Northern Transversal Strip. By contrast, southern parts of the country will experience warm and clear weather. The Central Highlands and Western regions are expected to face the coldest conditions during this period.
MAGA continues to monitor at-risk municipalities and urges producers to take preventive steps to protect their crops and livestock. Recommendations include shielding poultry with windbreak curtains, inspecting roofs and farm infrastructure, avoiding agrochemical application during early mornings due to high humidity levels, and conducting nighttime irrigation to maintain soil moisture while minimizing risks from low temperatures or frost.
The bulletin notes that most agricultural areas currently have soil moisture below 25%, necessitating emergency irrigation in western regions. In Petén—where soil moisture exceeds 50%—farmers are advised to keep drainage systems clear to prevent flooding if rain occurs.
"With these monitoring actions and preventive communication efforts," MAGA stated, "we reaffirm our commitment to support producers and ensure food security for the country amid this weekend's climate variations."
