The Instituto Guatemalteco de Seguridad Social (IGSS) held a graduation ceremony for 113 new medical specialists who will join various healthcare units across the country. The event was attended by IGSS authorities and took place at the Auditorio Mayor of Universidad Panamericana.

These new specialists completed their training in 20 different fields, including anesthesiology, general surgery, oral and maxillofacial surgery, internal medicine (in both Guatemala City and Quetzaltenango), physical medicine and rehabilitation, gynecology and obstetrics, emergency medicine, pathology, psychiatry, pediatrics (Guatemala City and Quetzaltenango), radiology and diagnostic imaging, traumatology, pediatric infectious diseases, adult intensive care therapy, neurology, pulmonology, dentistry, urology, and otorhinolaryngology.

Most of the specialties are accredited by the Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala (USAC), with adult neurology certified by Universidad Mariano Gálvez. All programs are part of IGSS’s Training and Development Program aimed at preparing competent professionals with a humanistic approach.

According to IGSS leadership, investing in these master's programs helps expand the availability of healthcare professionals and improves service quality for those insured by the institute. With this cohort of graduates, IGSS has trained a total of 1,920 doctors between 2005 and 2025. Additionally, 521 residents are currently undergoing training in 32 active programs.

During the ceremony, M.Sc. Zámara Yohana Velásquez Ramos de Herrera, Deputy Manager of Human Resources at IGSS, congratulated the graduates for their effort and dedication. Dr. Gary Abraham Reyes López, head of the Administrative Department within the Training and Development Department at IGSS, highlighted each resident's academic commitment.

Lic. José Adolfo Flamenco Jau, president of the Board of Directors at IGSS stated: “These new specialists represent a direct benefit for our beneficiaries by strengthening our ability to resolve cases and provide timely care in our units.”

The new group is expected to help ensure more humane, accessible, and high-quality health services for all affiliated members.
