A workshop focused on strengthening Guatemala's agri-food systems has begun, bringing together several government agencies and international organizations. The event, titled "FAO Global Roadmap: Contributing to the Development of the Action Plan for the Transformation of Agri-Food Systems in Guatemala," aims to analyze and define actions that will support access to healthy and sustainable food.

The workshop is a collaborative effort involving the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food (MAGA), the Secretariat for Food and Nutritional Security of the Presidency (SESAN), and other institutions, with support from the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in Guatemala.

This meeting follows an initial session held in March, which aimed to set out a roadmap for achieving results over short, medium, and long-term periods. The main goal is to ensure that all people in Guatemala have access to nutritious food produced through sustainable methods.

Participants included José Antonio López, Deputy Minister of Rural Economic Development; Rafael Zavala, FAO Guatemala representative; Martha Salazar, Technical Deputy Secretary of SESAN; and David Laborde, Director of FAO’s Division of Agricultural Economics and Policy.

During his remarks, Deputy Minister López stated: “We reaffirm our commitment to work for a more inclusive, more resilient and more competitive agri-food system that responds to the current needs of Guatemalan families and generates opportunities for sustainable development throughout the country.”

The initiative is led by MAGA with backing from FAO Guatemala and other government entities. It seeks to ensure that changes in food systems directly benefit rural producers, indigenous peoples, and vulnerable populations—groups described as central to Guatemala’s agri-food system.

The organizers emphasized their ongoing commitment to building a stronger agricultural sector for a safer future in Guatemala.
