The United Nations General Assembly has declared February 17 as the World Tourism Resilience Day, according to resolution A/RES/77/269. The purpose of this day is to highlight the need for tourism development that can withstand shocks, recognizing the sector's vulnerability to emergencies.
The Guatemalan Institute of Tourism (INGUAT) has stated that its main goal is to establish tourism as a key driver of Guatemala’s economic and social development within a framework of sustainability. The institute aims to create conditions that improve the country’s international competitiveness and support Guatemalans’ access to a dignified life.
According to the World Tourism Organization, tourism is one of the most dynamic sectors globally but remains vulnerable to social, climate, or health-related events. For this reason, resilience in tourism relies on sustainability, support, cooperation, and strengthening across the sector. It emphasizes the ability to anticipate difficulties and adapt efficiently and with planning.
INGUAT aligns its work with Guatemala’s Sustainable Tourism Master Plan 2015-2025. This plan includes strategies for sustainable tourism development through good socio-cultural, environmental, and business practices based on Global Sustainable Tourism Criteria.
"That is why INGUAT works in a coordinated manner on actions that strengthen sustainable tourism development, aware of the sector's vulnerability, carrying out actions focused on improvement, adaptation and creation of regulations, as well as training, registration, programs and projects that strengthen entrepreneurs and host communities," said INGUAT.
