The Guatemalan Social Security Institute (IGSS) marked the International Day of Persons with Disabilities by highlighting efforts to provide inclusive healthcare services and uphold the rights of people with disabilities.

The organization emphasized that inclusion is essential for dignified and barrier-free care. IGSS reported ongoing actions to improve service accessibility, strengthen care processes, and raise staff awareness about the needs of people with disabilities.

Every year on December 3, the International Day of Persons with Disabilities is observed. At IGSS units, medical teams, social workers, and user service staff offer appropriate support, clear communication, and safe spaces. These measures are intended to advance a more inclusive model of care.

The institution noted that people with disabilities face extra challenges when seeking healthcare, making it necessary to continue improving practices that ensure their well-being.

Leslie Leal from the Subgerencia de Prestaciones Pecuniarias stated: “It is a very important day in which promoting our rights so we can be more authentic, autonomous, and independent every day can happen.”

Leal also addressed obstacles faced by individuals with visual impairments, ranging from physical barriers to attitudes. She stressed the importance of always asking how best to provide support.

“All of us are people and deserve equal treatment in rights and obligations,” said Leslie Leal.

IGSS indicated that these initiatives are part of broader efforts to strengthen internal training and adapt infrastructure. The work aligns with the United Nations General Assembly’s call to promote autonomy and full participation for persons with disabilities.

According to IGSS, institutional teams remain committed to advancing a healthcare system that is accessible, respectful, and humane for all affiliates and beneficiaries.
