The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food (MAGA) and the International Regional Organization for Plant and Animal Health (OIRSA) took part in a family event at Pasos y Pedales, Plaza Bandera del Obelisco, to promote responsible use of antimicrobials in animals and agriculture. The event was held as part of World Antimicrobial Awareness Week.
At an educational booth, activities and games were organized for families, children, youth, and adults to increase understanding about antimicrobial resistance (AMR), which is considered a major global health threat. AMR occurs when bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites no longer respond to medicines intended to eliminate them. This situation is mainly caused by incorrect or excessive use of antimicrobials. The consequences impact animal production, agriculture, the environment, and human health.
During the event, organizers emphasized that improper use of antimicrobials in animals can lead to resistant microorganisms. These can be transmitted to humans through food, water, soil, or direct contact. Information was shared on best management practices, biosecurity on farms, responsible use of veterinary medicines, and sustainable agricultural practices.
The setting at Pasos y Pedales allowed direct engagement with the public to encourage responsible habits such as not self-medicating, completing prescribed treatments, avoiding antibiotics without a prescription, and maintaining hygiene measures.
Nadia Moreira from the Epidemiological Surveillance Department of Animal Health at the Vice Ministry of Agricultural Security and Regulations (VISAR) said: "Agro-producers should use antimicrobials only under professional supervision and respecting withdrawal periods in food."
The activity was organized by MAGA together with the Ministry of Public Health and Social Assistance (MSPAS), Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (MARN), and OIRSA.
