The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food (MAGA) is continuing its efforts to implement a sustainable livestock model in Petén. The initiative aims to promote an orderly transition toward more productive, efficient, and environmentally responsible livestock systems.

The program encourages practices that improve soil and water management, optimize pasture use, and strengthen meat and milk production without putting pressure on forested areas. Participating farms are adopting measures tailored to their specific conditions. These include planned pasture rotation, silvopastoral systems, forage diversification, rainwater harvesting, proper manure management, and reduced use of agrochemicals. The goal is to increase productivity while protecting natural resources.

In the current phase of the project, selected farms are installing electric fences as outlined in management plans developed with producers. This tool helps control grazing patterns, prevents cattle from entering sensitive zones, and allows for more efficient pasture rotation. It also supports better land organization and reduces practices that have historically contributed to the expansion into forested areas.

More than 130 farms in Petén are applying different aspects of this model based on their capacities. Some focus on forage management practices; others work on soil recovery or improving water access. A group of farms has been identified as ready to integrate electric fences as part of their strategy for productive transformation.

These actions are supported by technical assistance from the Directorate of Natural Resources and Agrotourism (DIRNA) under the Vice Ministry for Petén Affairs (VIPETÉN). They provide training through field schools, direct support, and guidance for accessing alternative financing mechanisms.

"With this coordinated work, MAGA reaffirms its commitment to promoting responsible, competitive livestock farming that is compatible with conservation of natural resources in the north of the country," stated MAGA.
