The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food (MAGA) has reaffirmed its commitment to the responsible use of antimicrobials in animals as a measure to protect animal health and public health. This statement was made during an inter-institutional meeting on antimicrobial resistance.

Juan José González, representing Epidemiological Surveillance from the Vice Ministry of Animal Health and Regulations (VISAR), emphasized the need for a joint approach to tackle antimicrobial resistance. "Antimicrobial resistance is a global alert that can only be addressed through intersectoral cooperation, not isolated efforts," González said.

González explained that antimicrobials are used to treat bacterial, parasitic, fungal, and protozoan infections. He warned that improper use can lead to the development of resistant microorganisms, which poses risks not only to animals but also to people who consume animal products.

He also highlighted the importance of collaboration between ministries to strengthen actions against this worldwide threat. The event took place at the Ministry of Public Health and Social Assistance and included participation from a representative of the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources.
