Online shopping offers convenience and access to a wide range of products, but it also brings risks such as fake online stores that imitate legitimate sites to steal personal or financial information.
These fraudulent websites often use appealing images, significant discounts, and names similar to well-known brands. They may also copy logos, fonts, and visual structures from real platforms. The main goal is to trick users into providing personal or banking details, making payments for products that are never delivered, downloading malicious files, or losing control over their financial information.
Fake stores frequently appear on social media, paid advertisements, or direct messages with enticing offers. To help consumers avoid falling victim to these scams, several warning signs can be identified:
- Prices that seem unrealistically low.
- Suspicious reviews without real photos or generic comments.
- URLs lacking HTTPS security protocols or containing spelling errors.
- Requests for payment outside the official platform through unfamiliar apps or unsupported bank deposits.
- Unclear or missing return policies.
A reliable store typically features reasonable prices, verified reviews, secure purchase buttons, and clear policies. In contrast, a fake store may display spelling mistakes, extremely low prices, and unconventional payment methods.
To shop safely online, consumers are advised to:
- Check for genuine reviews on external sources and specialized sites.
- Ensure the website uses HTTPS for secure connections.
- Read return and contact policies carefully.
- Use secure payment methods like credit cards with fraud protection or recognized platforms such as PayPal.
- Avoid making rushed purchases; taking time to research is important since urgency is a common tactic in fraud schemes.
An additional recommendation is to search the store’s name along with terms like “reviews,” “fraud,” or “experience” on Google before making a purchase. Other users may have already reported suspicious activity.
Enrique Rodríguez Mahuad, CEO at Banco G&T Continental stated: "At G&T Continental, we promote digital education as a tool to protect your financial well-being. We want every purchase you make to be backed by information, security and trust."
The bank encourages customers not to buy from online stores unless they have verified their legitimacy first. It also invites those interested in learning more about online safety to explore its cybersecurity resources.
