The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food (MAGA) organized a Farmers’ Fair in the community of San Fernando Chahal, located in the municipality of Chahal, Alta Verapaz. The event showcased local agricultural products such as papayas, limes, avocados, and other fruits and vegetables. Fifty producers participated by offering their harvests at accessible prices for families.
The fair attracted many buyers from both the local area and neighboring communities. Organizers said this turnout provided direct support to producers. The initiative was backed by the municipal government, private sector partners, and cooperation from the Mediterranean Fruit Fly Prevention and Control Program (MOSCAMED).
According to MAGA, "This type of alliance with key actors strengthens family farming and promotes sustainable rural development." During the fair, organizers also implemented a Mobile Nursery service that allowed participating farmers to leave their children in a supervised environment where they could take part in educational and recreational activities.
MAGA stated it is promoting Farmers’ Fairs throughout Guatemala due to benefits such as strengthening producers’ economies, boosting crop sales, and expanding access to new markets.
