The Isla de Flores in Petén, Guatemala, has been officially recognized as a “Pueblo Pintoresco” following the completion of a series of actions outlined by the Instituto Guatemalteco de Turismo (INGUAT). The program aims to promote the value, conservation, and revitalization of towns with notable natural and cultural characteristics.

According to INGUAT, earning the “Pueblo Pintoresco” distinction requires more than just maintaining an attractive appearance. Towns must also demonstrate commitment from local authorities and civil society to meet specific criteria. These include cleanliness, traffic reorganization, landscaping of green areas, regulation and implementation of signage, and establishing a tourist safety program.

INGUAT provided technical support throughout the process to help improve the image of Isla de Flores. Efforts included supplying paint for renovating building facades on streets selected by the municipal tourism planning office. As part of INGUAT’s “Arte y turismo, un país con más color” project, murals representing local nature and culture were created at the Centro Universitario de Petén (CUDEP) to welcome visitors.

The program initially nominated nine towns based on their distinctive features and initiatives. These were San Juan del Obispo in La Antigua Guatemala (Sacatepéquez), Livingston (Izabal), San Cristóbal Totonicapán, Quetzaltenango city, Salcajá (Quetzaltenango), Santa Catarina Palopó (Sololá), Zacapa city, Estanzuela (Zacapa), and Isla de Flores (Petén). Of these nominees, Estanzuela and Isla de Flores have now received official recognition as Pueblos Pintorescos in Guatemala.
