The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food (MAGA) in Guatemala has increased efforts to control the spread of the screwworm across the country. Surveillance and prevention measures have been given priority nationwide.
Between October 5 and 11, during epidemiological week 41, authorities inspected 632 transport units and 7,674 animals at various checkpoints. As a result, treatment was administered to 2,152 animals to help prevent further spread of the pest.
Additionally, MAGA staff visited 102 production units where they trained 409 people on detection methods and sanitary management practices. Authorities responded to 102 reports of suspected cases; these were addressed immediately and led to the identification and treatment of an additional 114 positive animals. In total, treatments have been provided to 2,226 animals during this period.
There were also 114 new confirmed cases reported for the week, bringing the cumulative total to 2,736 animal cases and 117 human cases since monitoring began. This increase has prompted a more intensive response from authorities as they work to contain further outbreaks throughout Guatemala.
Izabal is currently the most affected department with 575 cases (21.02% of all animal cases), followed by Suchitepéquez with 382 cases (13.96%). The distribution map indicates that there are dispersed outbreak sites in at least 22 regions.
MAGA officials emphasized that without timely interventions by their teams, rapid expansion of the pest would be likely. The ministry reaffirmed its commitment to agricultural health across Guatemala.
Producers are encouraged to report any suspected outbreaks through MAGA’s official application at https://www.maga.gob.gt/aplicacion-dsa/ or via WhatsApp at number 3570-7727 for immediate technical assistance.
