Groups from the Center for Learning for Rural Development (CADER) in the communities of La Romana, Santa Amelia, Canchacán, and Poxté, located in Poptún, Petén, recently took part in a training session focused on producing artisanal feed concentrate for backyard and improved poultry. The training aimed to use locally available resources.

The event was organized by staff from the Family Agriculture Program of the Municipal Agency for Rural Extension (AMER), which is part of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food (MAGA) in Poptún.

According to organizers, one goal is to improve poultry nutrition, reduce production costs, and strengthen the productive capacities of rural families.

During the session, participants learned how to prepare a nutritious feed concentrate using corn, beans, cassava or papaya leaves, and eggshells. These ingredients are accessible within their communities and can help enhance poultry feeding practices in an economical and sustainable way.

“These actions are part of MAGA’s institutional commitment to promote development, self-sufficiency and productivity in the department,” stated MAGA representatives.
