A group of 60 artisanal fishers in Iztapa, Escuintla has formalized their association by receiving legal documentation for the Las Morenas Artisanal Fishers Association (ASOPESCAM). The process was supported by the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food (MAGA) through its Vice Ministry of Rural Economic Development.
The documents provided to ASOPESCAM include a notarial deed, registration certificates, a public deed, and official record books. These materials give the association legal status and enable members to formalize their internal structure. MAGA will continue to support the group as it strengthens its organizational capacity.
According to MAGA, "the organization of fishers is a key step for their development because it allows them to access opportunities that drive hydrobiological production, manage projects, and promote initiatives that improve the quality of life for their families."
MAGA also stated: "MAGA continues accompanying and promoting the strengthening of productive organizations in the country so they can face challenges in the artisanal sector and take advantage of new development opportunities."
This initiative reflects ongoing efforts by Guatemalan authorities to help small-scale producers gain access to resources and better position themselves within local markets.
