The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food (MAGA) has distributed ICTA B-7 maize seeds and squash to 1,100 families in the municipalities of El Chal and San Andrés, Petén. The initiative aims to support family farming and improve local food security.
In El Chal, 400 families received two 10-pound bags of maize each along with a bag of squash seeds. These supplies are intended to help increase basic grain production and diversify family diets.
In San Andrés, 731 families benefited from the same distribution. The process was supported by technical staff from VIPETÉN, rural agricultural extension workers, and personnel from MAGA’s Food Storage Department.
According to MAGA, "The ICTA B-7 maize variety stands out for its high yield and adaptation to local conditions, while squash provides vitamins, minerals, and fiber, strengthening family nutrition."
MAGA states that these actions are meant to boost food security and nutrition as well as promote self-sufficiency and healthier diets in rural communities in Petén.
