Technical staff from the Food Safety Directorate of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food (MAGA) conducted a sanitary inspection aboard a tuna fishing vessel located offshore in Puerto Quetzal. The purpose was to ensure that the fish is free from contaminants and meets national health standards.

Leslie Archila, head of the Department of Animal and Hydrobiological Products at the Food Safety Directorate, stated that this inspection is part of MAGA’s regular activities to protect consumer health. “We are on a tuna fishing vessel for the verification of the safety system and to guarantee that the tuna caught is suitable for human consumption,” said Archila.

During the inspection, technical staff reviewed documentation related to control measures applied during capture and checked storage temperatures for the tuna. They also collected direct samples from the product, which will be sent to a laboratory to confirm they are free from contaminants.

Archila explained that these analyses help confirm that “the fish was in optimal conditions during its storage.” Additionally, food safety personnel toured the vessel’s structure to verify that its facilities do not pose risks of contaminating the product.

Through these actions, MAGA reaffirms its commitment to monitoring food safety and strengthening confidence in domestic seafood products destined for both local consumption and international markets.
