The Feria del Cordero, held in the second week of November in Chiantla, Huehuetenango, focused on improving sheep genetics through the exhibition, selection, and recognition of flocks. The event awarded those animals that best matched the characteristics for each category: Criollo, Mejorado B, Mejorado A, and Elite.
Specialized judges and technical staff from the Vice Ministry of Agricultural Health and Regulations (VISAR) of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food (MAGA) evaluated participating animals to classify and select the best flocks based on phenotypic traits and breed standards.
According to organizers, "The decision was strictly based on conformation criteria and racial quality for each group, without assigning numerical scores or ranking within categories. This emphasized a transparent process based on technical standards."
A total of 26 producers participated: four in Rebaño Criollo, six in Mejorado B, eight in Mejorado A, and eight in Elite. Support from VISAR’s Genealogical Registry Department helped breeders better understand and apply genetic selection criteria. Organizers stated that this support promotes practices aimed at improving production and developing the sheep industry in the region.
Event results showed that producers are interested in maintaining and enhancing breed purity. Organizers highlighted the importance of continued genealogical registration for flocks as a tool to consolidate information, certify genealogies, and support animal quality—especially among high-value genetic groups like Elite flocks.
The event included guest judges, local technicians, representatives from organizations such as ASOCUCH, Cooperativa Paquixeña, ACORDI, Cooperativa Joya Hermosa, ADECAF, Cooperativa Flor Bacuense, as well as MAGA representatives. Organizers said this collaboration supports technical advancement and productivity within Guatemala’s sheep sector.
