From January to October this year, 17,376 producers received ICTA B7 maize and squash seeds along with specialized technical support aimed at strengthening family farming in rural areas. The initiative is part of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food (MAGA)'s ongoing efforts to support family agriculture by providing both agricultural inputs and technical assistance focused on sustainable practices and nutritious food production.

The distribution took place in the departments of Retalhuleu, San Marcos, Quiché, Petén, Chiquimula, Alta Verapaz, Chimaltenango, and Huehuetenango. These activities were carried out through the Vice Ministry of Food and Nutritional Security (VISAN) with the goal of increasing local production and self-consumption.

The ICTA B7 maize seeds, developed by the Institute of Agricultural Science and Technology (ICTA), are recognized for their quality, pest resistance, and adaptability to local climate conditions. This results in higher yields for farmers. The distributed squash seeds help conserve soil moisture and provide essential nutrients such as vitamins A and C, iron, and fiber.

Technical staff from the Department of Food Storage under the Directorate for Community Food Production Support (DAPCA) provided comprehensive support that included soil preparation, planting techniques, crop management, pest control, and harvesting. This was intended to ensure efficient and sustainable production processes.

Nutritionists involved in the Nutrition-Sensitive Agriculture component also offered educational sessions on healthy eating habits in various municipalities. They emphasized child nutrition and highlighted the benefits of maize and squash in daily diets.
